Delta Airlines Cancellation Policy regarding Covid19 Pandemic. Delta Airlines is no exception to the distress the COVID 19 brought about. The entire aviation industry including Delta Airlines has been hit in the worst way possible. Their passengers are equally harmed by the pandemic and the airline is doing their best to give the best possible service to them in their own way.

Passengers whose flights got cancelled because of the pandemic are given some choice. They are given under:


Passengers who are compelled to change or cancel their flights because of the pandemic are given an airline credit which is worth equal to the amount you paid for your ticket. You can use this credit in your upcoming booking and its validity has been extended from 1 year to 2 years.

 This new policy which will be valid till September 2022 will apply to those passengers

-who booked their flight by 3 April 2020 to travel in April or May 2020

-who have existing airline credit or cancelled reservations from March to May 2020


The airlines in certain cases provide cash refunds instead of just airline credit. Cash refunds will be given

-if a passenger was supposed to travel within the United States

-if a passenger’s flight timing is significantly changed or cancelled by the airline

-If a passenger’s flight is cancelled and that particular passenger chooses to cancel instead of changing the date to travel in the future, he/she will be entitled to a refund. If the ticket is fully unused, he/she will get a full refund but if the ticket is partially used, he/she will get a partial refund for the unused part of the ticket. This applies to even non-refundable Delta Airlines Booking.

-If a passenger has purchased a bag, seat or any extra service before, upon cancelling, he/she will be refunded for the same.


You can cancel your flight for free if you cancel within 24 business hours after your booking. For instance, if you book your flight on Friday 11:00 PM you will be eligible for free cancellation till Monday at 11:00 PM keeping in mind that Saturday and Sunday aren’t counted as business hours/days.

This 24-hour free cancelation policy applies to all fare types be it Basic Economy Fare, Non-refundable or Refundable aka Flex ticket. There is no cancellation fee during this period so passengers are requested to follow this timeline in order to avoid a penalty.


-Refundable or Flex booking: If you cancel a refundable ticket after the 24 hours free cancellation period, you will retain the value of your ticket. You can request a refund. Here, passengers can cancel their flight at least 24 hours before departure.

-Non-refundable booking: If your ticket is non-refundable, you’ll be charged a certain amount as cancellation fee when cancelled. And any remaining value will be given to you in a form of eCredit which can be used in your future booking. Cancellation fee starts from 100 USD to 500 USD depending on your itinerary. Here, passengers can cancel their flight at least 24 hours before departure.

-Basic Economy ticket: Do check your ticket to see if you are eligible to cancel your ticket prior to departure and receive an eCredit. If you have a Basic Economy ticket under COVID 19 travel waiver on or before April 30, 2021 you may change or cancel your ticket prior to departure and receive an eCredit. If it’s a ticket of 30 April, 2021 and after, you’ll lose the value of your ticket.


If passengers have to make cancellations due to extenuating circumstances like a death in a family, medical issues, judicial order, government order, etc., the airline will try their best to be considerate and be understanding towards the passenger. Hence, passengers may ask for a refund even in case of a non-refundable booking as an exception. It may be given to you provided that the necessary documents in question asked by the airline are given by the passenger.


The airline will mark you as a no-show if you do not cancel your reservation before your departure time and date. No passenger is eligible for a refund/voucher/credit if they are marked as a no-show. The whole value of the ticket will be forfeited and you shall not get anything. So, passengers are kindly requested to make sure to change or cancel it before your departure date and time based on your fare type.

The airline is very strict with its no-show policy.


If the airline delays or cancels any passenger’s flight for any reason, the airline may make a schedule change for the passenger and it is totally up to the passenger to accept that or not. They can choose to accept the schedule change or ask for a refund/credit instead.

If the airline cancels a passenger’s flight who is due to depart from any European airport, he/she will be eligible to get compensation as high as 700 USD depending on the reason for cancellation, fare type, etc.

Delta Airlines try not to delay at any cost unless there is some technical issue or air traffic. And even if there is a delay, the airline will do their best to keep their passengers comfortable with food and water. Lavatory and medical facilities will be given in times of need. Accommodation such as hotel stay in case of connecting flights on different days as well as airport transport will be taken care of by the airline. If the delay leads you to reach your destination 3 hours later than planned, you will be entitled to get compensation as high as 700 USD depending on the reason of delay, fare type, etc.

In a case like this, the airline can name some factual situations as the reason for cancellation. For instance, there can be a natural calamity, state emergency, security concerns, operation failure, lack of passengers, issues with the pilots, mechanical error, etc.


Delta Airlines followed a refund policy where their passengers will be given a refund by the party with whom he/she booked with. Passengers are therefore requested to contact the airline or any third party with whom you made your booking to ask for a refund. If you make your reservation with the airline, contact the airline and if you make your reservation with a third party, contact that particular third party.

Passengers can make cancellations in a few ways. You can cancel your reservation by yourself on the airline’s official website and app. Contact the airline if you made your booking with them and if you made your booking with a third party, contact that particular third party to cancel.

 Those passengers who wish to cancel online or on the app can follow these steps to cancel their Delta Airlines Reservations :

-First of all, log in

-Click on “My Trip”/ “My Booking”

-Pick the reservation which you wish to cancel from the available flights

-Press on cancellation

-Confirm your cancellation by clicking “Yes”

-After your trip is canceled, you can claim a refund if you are eligible

If you are eligible for a refund, you will get it in 7-10 business days according to your mode of payment and to the account with which you paid for your flight.

If you are cancelling through the airline you can call 8002211212. Upon asking by the airline, you need to give your confirmation code, first name and last name to verify your reservation. And there, you can simply ask the reservation team’s agent to cancel certain flights for you. And while you and the agent are in the process of cancelling your reservation, you can ask him/her to see if your ticket is eligible for a refund. Passengers can ask the agent if they have any other doubts and queries related to your ticket.
