A Bahamian owned airline, Southern Air started in 1999 and currently flies Charter flights in the Bahamas and around the world. The airline is headquartered in Florence, Kentucky and has a current fleet size of 10 aircrafts. Southern air was as of November, 2021 merged with Atlas Air. 

Southern Air is committed to flying passengers at economical rates while retaining the goodwill and image of the Bahamas as their company says “Flying is our business; Service is our asset.”. The airline operates an all-Boeing fleet and is focused on providing quality travel to both Domestic and International clients. Check in

Passengers flying with Southern Air are required to check-in at least two hours prior to the flight’s scheduled departure. Entries into flights are closed an hour prior to the flights scheduled take-off. Passengers also must make sure to pay for travel prior to check-in time as non-confirmed seats will be released and sold off. 

At the time of check-in passengers have to make sure that they are in possession of a Government issued ID card which could be a passport, Driver’s license or a Voter ID which will be required at the time of security check-in.

Passengers are also required to acquire a boarding pass and check-in their baggage prior to the stipulated deadline. Failure to meet the deadline may result in cancellation of reservations and denied boarding compensation. The Check-In deadline at the Airport counter stands at 60 minutes prior to the scheduled flight departure and 15 minutes Boarding Gate deadline prior to the flight’s scheduled departure.

Bookings

To make sure that all passengers enjoy a convenient and comfortable time period required for necessary security and flight check-in, it is advised by Southern Air to at least book reservations up to 3 hours (minimum) prior to the arrival or departure of both domestic and international flights. The airline will not be held responsible for any reasonable delay that could prevent passengers from making it to their flights.

Bookings

All fares transacted with Southern Air are to be made in USD. Tickets purchased from Southern Air are all non-refundable unless explicitly stated as refundable. For passengers who have purchased refundable tickets it is mandatory that they make their cancellation at least two days prior to the flight’s departure date, non-compliance with this policy may result in forfeiture of refund and may devoid ticket of any future value. 

Any Name changes to be made can be done through proper written authorization and statement confirming that no section or part of the ticket has been used for travel.

If a ticketed reservation is cancelled properly prior to the departure date, then the next rebooking shall be deemed valid and as follows:

  • Fully unused tickets where no segments or services have been used or flown are valid for a time period of up to one year from the date of issue and no change fee shall be levied.
  • Partially used tickets are valid provided that the travel is completed within one year as of the outbound date and no change fees shall apply.
  • If tickets are not properly cancelled within the prescribed time frame then rebooking is not allowed and the segment/ticket shall hold no value.
  • Rebooking may result in fare differences and under such circumstances the difference in fares shall be calculated and charged.

Southern Airways Baggage Policy

Passengers are advised to make sure that their checked baggage does not exceed 40 pounds or 18 kilos in weight and 62 inches in length, breadth and height dimension. 

Maximum dimension allowed for a carry-on bag for the passenger to take in to the cabin is capped at 9-inch length, 10-inch breadth and 17-inch height. 

All passengers allowed to carry one personal item and one carry-on luggage only.

It is essential for passengers to know that there are no provisions for overhead Carry-Ons.

Items that exempted from the 40-pound weight limit include and is not limited to:

  • Infant Travel System (car Seat and stroller)
  • Canes
  • Medical assistive devices
  • Collapsible wheelchair
  • Pair of braces or other prosthetic devices (provided passengers are dependent upon the device for mobility)
  • Infant diaper bags
  • Baggage cart (two wheeled)
  • Please, make sure that your checked baggage does not include any sharp objects or liquids. All medication, valuable items and documents are advised to be carried in your carry-on baggage. 

    Surf Board/ Windsurf/ Kite surf (Maximum 62”) shall incur a $50.00 charge.

    Bicycle, Fishing Equipment, Scuba Equipment & Golf Bags will be treated as checked baggage and cannot be carried aboard as carry on. Make sure all items are packed properly.

    Southern Air advises passengers not to pack fragile items in checked bags due to the standard nature of baggage handling. It is advised to passengers to pack fragile items and perishable items as Carry-on. The airline is not responsible for any damage or loss arising out of standard handling of the item.

    Southern Air allows passengers to buy an extra seat for their fragile and perishable item at the price of an adult fare. It has to be made sure that the item is properly packaged and can be secured with a seat belt. The item should shift during flight and should not restrict or hinder the aisle, emergency exit or passage of others on board.

Southern Airways Pet Policy

Pets for travel must be kept inside their containers at all times.

Pets weighing up to 60lbs will incur a fee of $45.

Pets weighing above 60 lbs shall incur a fee of $75.

Passengers are also requested to make sure to download the Southern Air Transportation of Live Animals form.

Minor Policy

Southern Air accepts minors between the age of 5-11 years old at the time of travel.
